Phil Brown: Final friendlies are most important

Southend boss Phil Brown has commented that his squad's final three friendlies of the summer are of huge importance if they are to be ready ahead of the new season which kicks off in under two weeks time.

The Blues face Real Madrid C in Madrid tomorrow, kick-off 10:30am local time, before taking on Championship side Queens Park Rangers and Premier League side West Ham United at Roots Hall on Friday and Monday respectively.

Brown is determined to get the most out of his players ahead of the start of the season: “These three friendlies are very important in making sure we’re ready for the first game of the season against Plymouth. It’s always exciting around this time as the season is drawing closer, but we must work extremely hard in these three friendlies. All three will be great opposition and could well keep the ball for long spells. That will work our players even harder, but I’m sure they’ll give all three teams a great game."

“It’s not about the results in pre-season, I’ve said that a few times, but what is important is making sure we apply ourselves properly and get the most out of the games. I’m really looking forward to the two games at Roots Hall and I’m delighted we’re able to welcome Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce. The are both quite local and I know there’s a bit of rivalry with West Ham, so that should be a very good spectacle for the fans.”
