AFC Reserves defeated by Dereham

A hat-trick of goals from Dereham striker Nicholas Cage saw Sudbury’s reserves/under 21s lose 3-1 in the Thurlow Nunn League.

Sudbury opened the match with Swallows’ first shot blocked by Dereham keeper Powley in the first minute.

After two counter-attacks, Dereham took one of their first shots on goal – Hook setting up captain Pledger with his shot blocked by AFC’s Jackson.

In the 10th minute, Swallows fouled Magpies’ midfielder Goult which lead to a quickly taken free-kick from far out with Greenswade’s shot blocked by Yellows keeper Avenell.

In the 28th minute, Yellows keeper Avenell pulled down Hook with referee D. Birch awarding a penalty against Sudbury. Hook converted the spot-kick to give the Magpies the lead a minute later.

Brazitis, and the Yellows players’ felt they should have had a penalty, when Brazitis was pulled over – the ref continuing play.

The final piece of action from the first half saw a Town free-kick taken by Colman curling wide.

As the second-half got underway, a downpour of rain hammered down into the ground, with the pitch condition getting slippery.

Sudbury’s first substitution saw Brazitis leaving the field to be replaced by 12, Cawtheray as play restarted in the 45th minute.

Dereham took a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute when Hook scored in an empty net after Avenell came out of goal to block an original shot. 0-2

After build-up play from Sudbury in the 58th minute, the ball reached Swallows with his shot deflected away by a Dereham defender. The resulting corner taken by Kent saw Jackson’s shot headed over the bar.

In the 70th minute, a Sudbury player was fouled which lead to the ref awarding a free-kick. Owen fired the kick which fell to a Dereham defender who handled the ball. The referee awarded a penalty. Owen converted the penalty to pull a goal back for AFC.

In the 74th minute, a shot from Magpies’ captain Sam Pledger saw his shot blocked by Guyon. The resulting corner was defended by the Yellows.

In the 81st minute, Yellows captain Chisholm was involved in an incident which saw the player receive a minor lip injury. The captain continued with play.

But Dereham’s win was confirmed with Hook completing a hat-trick with a goal past Avenell in the 88th minute.

The home fans were very disappointed with the performance of the referee, awarding silly free-kicks and reacting late to tackles. I felt it was a scrappy performance that could be improved. Fans felt the referee was being biased.
