Danny Guthrie's spectacular 25-yard winner saw Reading come from a goal behind to beat Ipswich Town.
Tabb played more than 100 games for the Royals before joining Ipswich in the summer and put the visitors ahead after 14 minutes. A deep cross from Carlos Edwards was met by Tabb's far-post volley with the midfielder sliding home the loose ball after McCarthy had parried his first effort.
Ipswich, who had lost their last four matches against Reading, conceded an equaliser a minute before half-time with Le Fondre scoring from close range as the away side failed to deal with a ball into the penalty area.
Town striker David McGoldrick had a chance to put the visitors back in front, but narrowly missed connecting with Daryl Murphy's low cross.
That miss proved costly as Guthrie won it with a powerful winner to give Reading the perfect start as they look to make an immediate return to the Premier League.
Andrew Bond's 89th minute goal earned Colchester victory against League One newcomers Gillingham.
The League Two champions almost took the lead during the first period but Danny Kedwell crashed his shot off the woodwork.
U's keeper Sam Walker was forced in to action by Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale as the hosts pushed on into the second half.
But it was Colchester who grabbed all three points as substitute Bond drilled home late on.
Colchester had more possession at 54% at full-time, with both sides having 11 shots on target each.
McCormick did well to tip away Freddy Eastwood's 25-yard free kick before denying Laird again with his legs, while Anthony Straker skewed wide.
Rueben Reid wasted the visitors' best chance, firing straight at keeper Daniel Bentley.
Coming up to full-time, Argyle had 61% possession compared to Southend's 39% with Plymouth edging out more shots, 4 to Blues' 3.
