Philips hopes to lead Blues to win

Mark Phillips hopes his experience can help Southend can return to winning ways as they travel to face Bury on Saturday.

At 31, Phillips is one of Blues’ most experienced heads, and along with skipper John White and couple others, he’s looking to help the younger members of the squad.

He said: “I’m one of the older lads in the squad. There are quite a few young players in the team.

“Personally I look to lead, along with John White and a few others. We need to grow quickly as a team.

“I’d love John to be back fit on Saturday. He’s our captain and a leader and has a big impact on the pitch.

“Things will turn in our favour. We are a tight knit team and we’re all working very hard to turn things around.

“We’ve got to keep training hard and playing hard, as we’ve been doing.

“It’s not happened in the last few games for us, individual errors have cost us and once we cut that out we’ll get back on track.

“We still believe in each other as a squad and as individuals. The way to react to this bad run is just to work hard.

“We’ve made a few mistakes individually but at the end of the day it is a team error.

“They all seemed to have happened at once. Hopefully on Saturday we can keep it tight and pick up an important win.”
