AFC Sudbury Reserves 3-1 Debenham Leisure Centre FC

Three goals in the first half saw the home side to an even-sided encounter at the MEL Group Stadium with the Yellows defeating Debenham LC 3-1.

The Yellows took an early eight minute lead when an individual effort from Stephney Thurgood saw him pick up his first Sudbury goal, after Bailey set him up.

Sudbury continued to pile on the pressure as Thurgood was setup in the tenth minute but Cussons defended the ball away. Sudbury had another chance, moments after, but Fisher was unable to bring down the ball from Swallow’s cross.

Eight minutes later, Sudbury took a 2-0 lead as Swallow outran the Hornets’ defenders and easily swept the ball into the net past keeper Sam Chilvers.

Dan Smith had a selection of chances for the Yellows, with both his efforts in the twenty-first and twenty-second minutes saved by visitors’ keeper Chilvers.

On the half/hour mark, Debenham appealed for a handball from 30 yards out of goal. The resulting free-kick was defended and a long cross was sent in towards Thurgood but he was unable to slot his effort past Chilvers.

Thurgood bagged himself a brace on the stroke of half-time: An original header by skipper Adams was cleared off the goal-line but Thurgood was on hand to fire the ball to give Sudbury a 3-0 lead.

The half came to a close with Debenham having limited chances.

The Hornets came into the second-half, looking more powerful. A shot from Baker was headed over after fifty minutes.

Sudbury continued to play dominantly as they went in search for another goal. Swallow setup Thurgood but Chilvers was easily able to collect the light tap.

In the sixty-third minute, AFC made a double substitution: Brazitis came on for Smith while Fisher was replaced by recent-signing Antonny Carderio.

The Hornets made their first change of the night: Jerome Haynes coming off for Ben Golding. Two minutes later, Jamie Gregory was booked for a foul.

Debenham thought they had scored in the 77th minue when Golding crossed into Rickwood but his shot was marked offside. The visitors made their second sub as Tom Hardwick came off for Jamie Payne after seventy-nine minutes had been played.

But in the eighty-third minute, the Hornets scored a consolation goal: after a Sudbury free-kick was sent in too far, the visitors were able to cross into Rickwood with Avenell being unable to save the shot.

A minute later saw Tom Lait come on for Ryan Swallow for the hosts.

Despite putting pressurised in the second-half, Sudbury were able to hold on for a well-earned victory.
