Mark Phillips was delighted to help Southend to their 1-0 victory at Burton, after Eastwood scored the winner deep into stoppage time.
Phillips was thrilled to see the striker’s shot hit the back of the net.
“We stayed patient right until the end and got the goal I felt we definitely deserved right at the end,” said the centre-back.
“We had to really battle out there but it was great to get the clean sheet and the three points.
“We had been playing well without getting the rewards for it but we’ve won our last two league games now and shown we have good characters and good players here in our squad.”
Phillips helped the Shrimpers secure their second successive clean sheet and was partnered at the back by new loan signing Rob Kiernan. The Wigan centre-back will be with Blues for the next three months.
And Phillips believes Kiernan’s arrival will keep all of the club’s defenders on their toes.
“I thought Rob did really well and we have four of us battling for a place in the team back there now,” said Phillips. We have Luke Prosser and Adam Thompson, who couldn’t play today, who are good defenders and it’s good to have that kind of competition for places.
“You need to fight for the jersey but that’s the way it should be. We have a good squad now and have some quality strikers too. They haven’t been getting the luck but we know they’re all capable of scoring goals and Freddy popped up with a great goal for us at the end to win us the game which was brilliant.”
