Tommy Smith's early header gave Ipswich back-to-back away victories as they beat struggling Charlton at The Valley.

The defender converted Aaron Cresswell's corner for the only goal in a game that showed why both teams have struggled for consistency this season.

Charlton's best opportunity fell to Rhoys Wiggins, whose shot was palmed on to a post by Dean Gerken.

Matt Richards's penalty in the closing moments of the match secured a point for Cheltenham at high-flying Southend

The hosts, who had won their previous five, took the lead when Kevan Hurst tapped in Barry Corr's set up.

But in the fourth minute of injury-time, the referee claimed that Blues player Anthony Straker handled the ball in the box resulting in a penalty which Richards, who previously had a goal disallowed, slotted home.
