Straker wants goals to keep coming

Anthony Straker just wants the goals to keep coming after Southend's second round victory in the FA Cup.

Straker headed home from Kevan Hurst’s cross to claim his third in the FA Cup goal so far this season.

The midfielder said: “It was a great win at Chesterfield, and there’s a lot of belief in the squad.

“The first half was one of our best 45 minutes of the season, we scored two good goals and attacked well against a very good side.

“Even the early goal didn’t really dent our confidence at all as we went straight up the other end pretty much and got in front.

“Once you’re in front it is important to defend the lead well and we did just that, especially in the second-half.

“I can’t really remember them having too many clear cut chances before we got the third goal. We just kept going and eventually we got that third goal – it was a great finish from Hursty.

“I’m just delighted to be able to chip in with some goals. I can’t remember getting too many headers in my career.

“It was a great cross for Kevan, we all know he can provide that sort of delivery, but to see it go in was great.”

Asked about his solo run for the third goal, Straker admits he hasn’t tried that piece of skill in the past.

He said: “I was up against the man and just decided to chip it over him, I didn’t really think about it.

“It’s not something I’ve tried a lot of times in training or anything like that. I was just pleased it led to the goal that killed the game off."

Blues face Millwall at home in the Cup on January 4th, but are away to Torquay next Saturday.
