REPORT: AFC Sudbury Reserves 0-4 Brantham Athletic

AFC Sudbury Reserves/Under 21s were knocked out of the Red Insure League cup as they lost 4-0 to Brantham Athletic.

The hosts were outplayed throughout the majority of the match, in the team’s first home fixture since mid-December.

Brantham’s number 5 was booked for a tackle on an AFC player in the 7th minute.

A minute later, the Yellows saw themselves one nil down courtesy of an own goal from a Brantham free-kick.

Brimwood gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the tenth minute, as his teasing shot was struck past AFC goalkeeper Avenell.

Brazitis had a good chance for the Yellows in the 28th minute, following good build-up play from Kemp, although he could only fire his shot over the crossbar.

The home side had a good chance to score before the interval, as a free-kick drilled into the box by Mark Bailey met Jackson who headed the ball just wide of the post.

Straight from kick-off, the Blue Imps were teasing the Sudbury goal, with passes being blocked by the home defence.

The Yellows, who were managed by first-team assistant boss Ian Brown and first-team player Michael Shinn, made a double substitution as Swallow and Statham replaced Fisher and Jackson.

In the 64th minute, the visitors made an alteration as number 8 came off for number 12.

A minute later, Adams pulled down an Athletic player, with the referee awarding a free-kick. The resulting free-kick was shot wide.

On the 70th minute, George Day came on for Stephney Thurgood, in the home side’s final substitution.

The visitors had a decent chance in the 74th minute, as a shot from number 6 was cleared by Greenwood. Brantham’s final sub saw number 7 leave the field for number 14.

In the 80th minute, Brantham’s number 11 saw his shot hit the crossbar and tumble out, with Avenell clearing the ball.

But four minutes later, Mark Bailey took down former Yellow Matty Riland, with the referee pointed to the spot with no hesitation. The resulting penalty was scored by Gunn, despite Avenell diving the correct way.

Mann put the game out of sight for the Yellows, as he scored following good build-up play to make it 4-0 to Brantham, to send them through into the semi-finals where they will face Felixstowe & Walton.
