Debenham LC came from 2-1 down to beat AFC Sudbury Reserves/Under 21s 4-2 in the Thurlow Nunn First Division league at the Wardale-Williams Stadium.
The hosts were full of optimism on the back of a 10-2 midweek cup victory at Cornard United, and were dominant in the early stages of this match, with Josh Trenter seeing a third minute strike parried away. The resulting corner hit the side-netting for a goalkick in the visiting goal.
AFC’s Jordan Brazitis received a booking in the opening stages for a foul.
A second attacking spell from AFC saw Tyler Kemp’s long distant cross meet Trenter who saw his right-footed shot curve just past the post.
But in the fifth minute, the Yellows found themselves a goal down, as Jack Seccombe’s strike was hit into the net with an AFC player knocking the ball out of the goal from the inside of the line. The referee, Gerald Daish, let the goal stand despite the protests from the AFC players.
The Hornets continued to provide powerful attacks, as Clarke’s ball to Heathcote was easily caught by Hawkins in the 13th minute.
Play was paused for a few moments after Cameron Ward received treatment for a knock in the 20th minute, with the forward continuing to play following treatment.
A few moments after, the Yellows had an attacking stint, as Trenter’s ball found Jordan Brazitis, who was dispossessed by Brock’s sliding tackle, seeing the ball go out for an AFC corner. The corner was crossed towards Johnny Kerridge, who headed the ball over the bar.
In the 24th minute, Sudbury were level as Josh Kerridge struck the ball in the bottom right corner of the goal past visiting keeper Sam Chiluers.
And from the restart, the Yellows made a powerful attack with the ball sent to Josh Trenter, who ran towards the oncoming Debenham keeper Chiluers. Trenter was able to circle the keeper and fired into an empty net to send the hosts ahead in the space of two minutes.
In the 26th minute, AFC had a corner which was taken short to defender Tyler Kemp, who played the ball into the box which was scrambled away by the Hornets defence.
Debenham had a few chances blocked, later on in the first half, including an attack as Lewis Kemp’s ball met Jack Seccombe, who had a shot blocked by Ross Mackay, which deflected away for a corner.
The half closed with a free-kick for the Yellows, taken by Brazitis which was headed away by the visiting defenders.
Debenham came out for the second half, growing in confidence, and they were level after four minutes played: Reece Clarke crossed the ball to Jack Seccombe who slotted past AFC ‘keeper Hawkins.
And a minute later, the visitors, in a navy blue and yellow strip, completed a turnaround as Seccombe’s shot on target saw Hawkins push the ball into the path of Ryan Titlow, who fired the ball past Hawkins.
Trenter continued to cause the Debenham defence problems, and saw his 52nd minute shot hit the post with the loose ball released from the box.
Brazitis also continue to provide chances for the Yellows, as his cross saw the goalkeeper dive to par the ball away.
In the 65th minute, Sam Diaper came on for Lewis Kemp, in the Hornet’s first alteration of the afternoon, before Jordan Brazitis made way for Joe Chester, four minutes after.
Chester was called into action immediately, as he attempted to cling onto an AFC cross, but was unable to reach the ball.
Debenham sealed their victory in the 73rd minute, as an original shot saw the ball cleared and met substitute Sam Diaper who tapped in the rebound effort.
Ryan Titlow came off for Ben Atkinson (81’) before James Heathcote was replaced by Fabio Pires (88’) for Debenham.
AFC’s final chance saw Joe Chester’s powerful effort claimed by Chiluers, before the referee sounded the final whistle, confirming Sudbury’s fifth consecutive league defeat.
