Southend sign defenders Bolger and Ibenfeld, and strikers Layne and Coulthirst

Southend United have signed four players this week, signing two defenders and two strikers.

Defender Cian Bolger joins the club from Championship side Bolton Wanderers, on a two year deal at an undisclosed fee, and will be joined by Danish central defender Mads Ibenfeldt on a one-year deal, who joins as a free agent.

Bolger, who was at Roots Hall last season, has previously played for Leicester City, Bristol Rovers, Colchester United, and was a skipper in the Bolton Academy.

The Blues have also signed Ibenfeld, following 'a successful trial', which saw him play against Concord, Ipswich and QPR during pre-season. He has played for Danish sides Akademisk, Bronshoj, Siilkeborg and NFC.

United's new strikers are Isaac Layne, who joins from non-league side Billericay Town for an undisclosed fee on a one-year contract (option of further year), and Shaquile Coulthirst, who joins on a season-loan loan deal from Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Billericay striker, Layne, spent time with Charlton Athletic during pre-season., while 19-year-old striker Coulthirst spent time at Leyton Orient and Torquay United during the latter half of last season, but made a Europa League apperance for Spurs.
