REPORT: AFC Sudbury Reserves 3-0 Woodbridge Town (Thurlow Nunn First Division)

Three first half goals helped send AFC Sudbury Reserves/U21s to a 3-0 victory over Woodbridge Town.

Johnny Kerridge gave AFC the lead after eight minutes, as he headed home from a corner.

And from the restart, Jack Guyton sent the ball to Johnny Kerridge who crossed the ball past Woodbridge goalkeeper Adam Wilson, and allowed Mark Ray to tap the ball home, to double the home side’s advantage.

In the thirteenth minute, an AFC free-kick, taken by Jordan Brazitis, was crossed the ball into the box towards Johnny Kerridge, but headed over the crossbar.

Five minutes later, Gianfranco Mallardo made a run down the right wing, and crossed the ball into the box towards Johnny Kerridge, but the ball was headed away by Ryan Garnham, the son of ex- Sudbury Town goalkeeper Dean.

The Yellows continued to dominate the half. Alfie Carroll released the ball towards Mark Ray, who did well to control the ball, but saw his shot hit the post, before the play was marked offside by the linesman.

Woodbridge, in their black and white striped kit, had a few chances during the half, with a shot blocked by an AFC defender; the resulting corner was punched away by AFC goalkeeper Louis Johnson.

Niall McPhilips crossed the ball into the box for the Woodpeckers, to Harry Cole who fired his shot wide of goal, in the 34th minute.

Just before the break, Sudbury went 3-0 up against the run of play, as Gianfranco Mallardo (pictured) was released with the ball, and produced a solo run towards goal where he went round visiting goalkeeper Adam Wilson and tapped home.

A half-time substitute for Woodbridge saw Steve O’Neill replace Niall McPhillips.

Mark Ray saw his powerful shot at the start of the second half caught by Adam Wilson.

Woodbridge made their second change of the match, when Ryan Keeble was replaced by Max Hutchings in the 56th minute. Afterwards, AFC made their first alteration, as Craig Avery replaced defender Alfie Carroll (58’).

Gianfranco Mallardo saw his cross in the 59th minute parried away by Wilson, before Sam Cole went off for Harry Green, for the visitors’ final change.

And substitute Harry Green made an impact as he had a shot diverted away by AFC’s Callum Minns.

AFC made their two remaining substitutes as Ollie Rumsey came on for Joe Chester (65’) and goal scorer Gianfranco Mallardo went off for Alex Breadman (67’).

Goal-scorer Mark Ray crossed the ball towards the path of Johnny Kerridge, but the striker was unable to clinch onto the end of the ball.

Sudbury survived a scare in the 78th minute, when Steve O’Neill’s shot was scrambled away. At the other end, skipper Josh Sheffield had a low shot blocked, before Jack Guyton saw his rebound effort also blocked.

The Yellows had several chances in the second half to extend their lead, but could not convert their chances. It was a very good performance from the hosts, who deserved the three points.

AFC are next in action when they travel to Haverhill Borough in the league next Saturday.
