Chants of "We are staying up" echoed around the Weston Homes Stadium this afternoon, after Colchester United beat promotion chasers Preston North End 1-0, to survive relegation on the final day of the League One season.

George Moncur's right-footed effort in the 81st minute was enough to help Colchester escape the bottom four of the League One table.

Chris Porter missed his penalty for the U's, midway through the second period, to worry the Colchester supporters, by Moncur's effort late on helped secure the vital win.

The three remaining relegation places go to Notts County, who lost 3-1 at Gillingham, Crawley, who lost 2-1 at home to Coventry, and Leyton Orient, who drew 2-2 with Swindon, who join Yeovil.

As for the promoted sides, champions Bristol City will be joined by MK Dons, who convincingly won 5-1 at home to Yeovil. Preston take the play-off place, and play Chesterfield, while Swindon face Sheffield Utd.
