Southend defender to remain with club

Southend United have announced that defender Adam Thompson has signed a new one-year deal at Roots Hall, with the option of a further year.

The 22-year-old was part of Blues' side that won promotion in the League Two play-off final at Wembley last season, but injury meant he missed the match.

The Harlow-born player started his career at Watford, before having loan spells at Brentford (twice), Wycombe Wanderers and Barnet, before joined the Essex side in summer 2013.

He has appeared in a Southend shirt 49 times so far.
