Braintree boss Cowley resigns following Lincoln link

Danny Cowley has resigned as Braintree Town's manager, followings rumours that he is expected to be unveiled as Lincoln City's new boss.

The 36-year-old PE teacher led the Iron to their highest ever finish in club history, as they finished the 2015-16 season in 3rd place in the National League.

The Iron were defeated 2-1 in the play-offs to Grimsby Town, who will face Forest Green in Sunday's Play-off Final for a place in the Football League.

Cowley has been linked to the vacant Lincoln City role, after Chris Moyses departed the club at the end of  the season.

Assistant boss Nicky Cowley has also departed, alongside brother Danny, with the duo interested in partaking a full-time football management role.

Braintree chairman Lee Harding was disappointed by the departure, but is now welcoming applications for the new manager's role.
