National League looking to 'enhance' play-off structure

The National League board is proposing to make changes to 'enhance' the Play-offs, following a recent AGM, this month.

Promotion finals in the North and South divisions could be played at Wembley Stadium, along with the current National League final, on the same day.

The play-off competition could also be expanded from four to six clubs.

To proceed with all three finals to be played on the same day, extra-time would be removed, and a penalty shoot-out would follow in the case of a draw after 90 minutes.

The board are aiming to achieve 'the most compelling and exciting competition climax to the season'.

The play-off format:

Wednesday - 5th vs 6th (Match A)
Thursday - 4th vs 7th (Match B)
Saturday - 2nd vs Winner Match A
Sunday - 3rd vs Winner Match B

All matches would be played over a single-leg, with higher-finish clubs having an advantage, due to playing the match at home.

The format is being proposed for next May (2017), and if successful, would begin in the following season (2017/18).
