Report: AFC Sudbury Reserves 3-0 Wisbech St Mary

AFC Sudbury Reserves picked up their fourth win in five games, as they beat Wisbech St Mary 3-0 at the Wardale-Williams Stadium.

Sudbury’s dominant afternoon began in the 11th minute, when Ryan McNicholas unleashed a powerful strike which rattled the crossbar, while Connor Pilbeam launched his effort over the bar at the other end.

A quick break in play saw Wisbech keeper Matt Halls change his footwear on 19 mins, while a free-kick to the visitors was punched away by Curtis Childs on 22 mins.

Moments after, Sam Mills did well to block Ross Harris’s shot, with Craig Ablett blazing the rebound effort over the bar.

Sudbury took the lead in the closing stages of the first half, as Ollie Peters struck the ball home after Hunter’s effort hit the post in a scrambled effort. Credit goes to the visiting goalkeeper who did his best to deny the Yellows in the build-up.

Nicky Davey and Connor Pilbeam both had efforts in the final few moments, but the Yellows departed at half-time with a 1-0 lead.

Half-time: AFC Sudbury 1-0 Wisbech St Mary

AFC’s Ben Hunter and Wisbech’s Connor Pilbeam both picked up bookings after fouls in the early stages of the half.

Sudbury doubled their advantage on the 47th minute, when Ollie Peters collected the ball and played it to Ben Hunter, who slotted home from close range past Matt Halls.

The visitors began to play aggressively, with a free-kick met Matt Prudence who played it to Dan Dougill, who struck the ball wide of Child’s goal.

In the 55th minute, the Yellows made it 3-0, as Ollie Peters unleashed a stunning strike from 30 yards out, and looped it over goalkeeper Matt Halls.

Alfie Carroll produced an excellent piece of movement, as his played a one-two to Hunter, and was almost through on goal, but Carroll was unable to clinch onto the ball.

Ben Hunter looked to get a second goal of the afternoon, although his effort was blocked by Jordan Goult.

Substitute Callum Fuller made an excellent run down the close wing, as he crossed the ball towards Kane Munday, and saw his shot deflect away.  The resulting corner saw Toby Mitchell stab the ball into the side netting, in another good chance from the home side.

Wisbech defender Dean Miller produced a good clearance to deny an AFC cross in the final stages of the match.

The Yellows produced an excellent performance, and fully deserved victory over their Cambridgeshire opponents.

Next up, the Reserves take a trip up to Norfolk to face Diss Town in the league next Saturday (29th).
