FA Cup Round-Up: Colchester and Southend crash out, Braintree progress

Southend United and Colchester United exited the Emirates FA Cup at the First Round, while Braintree progressed through to the Second Round Proper for the first time.

The Shrimpers crashed out to League One rivals Millwall on Friday evening, at the New Den, with Mahlon Romeo's 88th minute strike putting the Lions through. Wordsworth came closest for the Blues with his strike cleared off the line.

The U's also fell short at the first hurdle, as goals from Jay O'Shea and Ched Evans saw Chesterfield run out 2-1 winners. Colchester drew level after O'Shea's opener, through substitute Tarique Fosu, but Evans struck late on to see the U's defeated.

Meanwhile, Braintree avoided an upset to pick up an emphatic victory, as they saw off Eastbourne Borough 7-0. Patterson finished well from close range, from Cheek's blocked effort, to put the Iron ahead, before George Elokobi doubled the lead. Oli Muldoon struck a good free-kick moments after, in a stunning opening 21 minutes from the hosts. Lee Barnard picked up two goals in the second half, including a penalty, with Elokobi and Akinola completing the win.

Ryman League side Merstham were defeated 5-0 by Oxford United, Sutton United saw off Dartford 6-3 at the Kent side, Northampton defeated Harrow Borough 6-0, while the lowest ranked side Westfields, drew 1-1 with Curzon Ashton. Non-league side Solihull Moors collected a 2-2 draw with league side Yeovil Town. On Sunday, Notts County avoided an upset after coming from behind to draw with Boreham Wood, Maidstone United drew 1-1 with league side Rochdale, and Calor Div 1 side Taunton Town drew 2-2 with National League side Barrow.

Ipswich Town picked up their first away win in nine games, as Luke Chambers' late header secured a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Welsh international Tom Lawrence put the Blues ahead on 32, with a solo effort, before Gary Hooper finished a poor clearance from Bartosz Bialkowski, but the Town captain finished with three minutes remaining.

AFC Sudbury picked up an excellent win, as they defeated Staines Town 3-1 at the Wardale Williams Stadium. James Baker tapped home on 19 to put the Yellows ahead, with Sam Bantick heading home well from Jack Wilkinson's superb cross, twelve minutes later. Dylan Williams finished well in the closing stages of the half to pick up his first goal for the Yellows. Brandon Adams provided a consolation for the visitors, in a quiet second period.
