Report: AFC Sudbury Reserves 2-0 Debenham LC

AFC Sudbury Reserves fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Debenham LC, in the Thurlow Nunn League.

The Reserves went into Saturday’s match, having last played in a 1-1 draw against Haverhill at the start of December.

Charlie Gilbert had the first chance of the match, although his shot was blocked well by Tom Goddard. At the other end, Curtis Child made two good saves to deny the visitors.

The Hornets grew into the game, with Tom Goddard setting up Kevin Barker in the 14th minute, but his attempt was sent wide of the AFC goal.

And that effort proved to be a threat, as Debenham took the lead moments after: Kevin Barker produced a looping header over AFC goalkeeper Curtis Child after 15 minutes.

The visitors looked to extend their lead, as Matt Dixon attempted to play the ball forward to Paris Tuwizana, but the pass was too heavy, allowing Child to collect the ball.

Sudbury responded to Debenham’s goal, as Charlie Gilbert clipped his effort just wide of the goal.

Afterwards, Toby Mitchell was unlucky to see his header claimed by goalkeeper Steve Fenner.

Callum Watson and Charlie Gilbert produced further chances for the Yellows, but Debenham held their ground well.

The Suffolk-based visitors went into the break with a second goal, as Chris Brock headed home at the back post, scoring in the 40th minute.

Sudbury looked to get back into the game, and came close when Jake Colclough delivered the ball well to Callum Watson, although the attempt was cleared away.

Tom Dettmar and Kolade Salaudeen both had efforts blocked for AFC in the 50th and 52nd minutes.

Charlie Gilbert made an excellent run down the far wing, and took a shot himself, which flew wide of the target.

Debenham’s Zehnn Young struck a free-kick which was defended away well by the home side, while AFC’s Kade Ivatt saw a neat chance claimed by the visiting goalkeeper.

Tom Dettmar had another good chance in the 72nd minute, but the attempt was blocked by Kevin Barker. In the AFC goal, Child was on hand to block Lewis Kemp’s effort.

Gilbert had further efforts saved well by the visitors, but it was Debenham who held on for the victory.

AFC Reserves are next in action on Tue 27th, when they travel to Cornard United for a local derby in the league.
