Southend United's head grounds man Ken Hare was sacked on Saturday afternoon after the match between Blues and Bolton was postponed.
Hare was groundsman at Roots Hall for 27 years, but departs the club after parts of the pitch were not maintained, following freezing overnight weather in Essex.
The referee announced the postponement at 11am, forcing many supporters, especially those of Bolton, to return home.
It was the first match to be postponed at Roots Hall since January 2013.
