Southend's Adam Barrett retires from football

Southend United have announced that defender Adam Barrett will retire as a pro footballer.

The 37-year-old played football for 19 years at Southend, Leyton Orient, Plymouth, Mansfield, Bristol Rovers, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Gillingham and Wimbledon.

Barrett won individual awards for being part of the PFA divisional teams of the year for 2005, 2006 and 2013. He was part of the Blues squad that was promoted from League One in 2005-06, and was part of the play-off winning squads of 2004-05 and 2014-15.

He also won the Essex Senior Cup with the Shrimpers, and was promoted with Gillingham to League One in 2012.
